Do Sleep Problems Lead to Obesity and Obesity?
Children and adults often do not get enough sleep. This lack of sleep exposes those affected to an increased risk of developing obesity. Students in particular often have problems sleeping today.
A survey of more than 6,000 children conducted by the British Nutrition Foundation (BNF) found that 32 percent of elementary school students and 70 percent of secondary school students get less than nine hours of sleep a night. Many students wake up at least once a night
Many students have problems sleeping through the night or generally getting enough sleep each night. Half of the secondary school students surveyed said they woke up at least once in the middle of the night. Because sleep deprivation affects obesity, this development is extremely worrying. The survey also analyzed children's eating habits, and found that a quarter of secondary school students and every tenth elementary school student did not eat breakfast on days they woke up at night, the researchers report in a press release.
Screen time negatively affects sleep
Almost two out of three respondents (59 percent) from secondary school also said they spent time in front of the screen of their cell phone, television, or computer before going to bed. 49 percent of elementary school students reported similar behavior. This led the researchers to believe that this screen time could have an impact on disturbed sleep. The survey also looked at the sleep patterns of more than 1,500 adults and found that 43 percent of them get less than seven hours of sleep a night. 80 percent said they woke up at least once a night. Half of the respondents reported spending time in front of the screen of a cell phone, computer or television before going to sleep.
Poor sleep affects eating behavior
Poor sleep can cause both adults and children to make unhealthy choices when it comes to their eating habits, the study's authors explain. If sleep deprivation and sleep disorders cause adults and adolescents to feel grumpy and irritated, poor quality regular sleep can negatively affect eating habits, including higher calorie intake and more frequent consumption of less healthy foods.
Lack of sleep can make you sick
The report highlighted that sleep deprivation and sleep disorders are associated with an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure. The research reflects the results of a previous report published in Science Advances, which found that after a night of sleep problems, people feel physically weaker and at higher risk of obesity.
