Does coffee harm your heart?

Do you like to drink coffee but are worried that you may be consuming too much coffee during the day? Then the latest research will certainly be good news for you: drinking five cups of coffee a day is not healthier for your heart than drinking just one cup of coffee a day. There were even some people who ate 25 cups of coffee a day without increasing their risk of damage to the arteries and resulting serious heart disease.

The latest study by the Queen Mary University of London found that even consuming 25 cups of coffee a day did not add stiffness to the arteries. The results of the study were presented at this year's British Cardiovascular Society (BCS) Conference in Manchester.

Study included over 8,000 participants

In the past, coffee consumption has often been associated with an increased risk of stiffened arteries and dangerous heart diseases. The current study now examined 8,412 participants and found that consuming five cups of coffee is as safe for our arteries and heart as consuming less than one cup.

Some participants even consumed 25 cups of coffee without increasing the risk of stiff arteries. The participants were initially divided into three groups: One group included people who drank less than one cup a day. The second group consisted of participants who consumed between one and three cups, and the people in the third group drank three or more cups of coffee a day.

How Did Excessive Coffee Consumption Affect?

The average number of cups consumed by the third group was five, but some participants even consumed two dozen cups, the researchers report. The results showed that participants who consumed one cup of coffee per hour were at no greater risk of arterial stiffness than people who consumed less than one cup per day.

"Despite the great popularity of coffee worldwide, various statements could keep people from enjoying it," says study author Dr. Kenneth Fung of Queen Mary University of London in a press release. The current study has made it clear that coffee is not as bad for the arteries as previous studies have suggested, the expert explains.

Harmful effects of coffee?

Previous studies indicated that the effect of coffee on the arteries affects the heart and increases the likelihood of a heart attack or stroke.

More research needs to be done now to set safe limits for coffee consumption. The recommendations regarding the optimal amount of coffee consumed have varied considerably in recent years. However, a 2017 study by the British Medical Journal found that there are no consistent indications of any harmful relationship between coffee consumption and health, with the exception of those related to pregnancy and the risk of fractures in women.
