Liposuction is said to be cash benefit for women with lipedema

Some people spend a lot of money to lose weight by liposuction. The health insurance companies do not cover these costs. However, for some patients, the so-called liposuction will, according to the will of the Federal Minister of Health, become a cash benefit in the future.

Pathological fat distribution disorder

Almost three million women in Germany suffer from an abnormal fat distribution disorder (lipedema). "This is due to a circumscribed, symmetrical increase in subcutaneous fat predominantly of the lower, in 30% of the upper extremities," explains the German Society for Phlebology (DGP) on its website. One of the treatment options is so-called liposuction (liposuction). The costs of the therapies are currently not covered by the health insurance. This is about to change soon.

Disease occurs only in women

According to the DGP, the disease only occurs in women. "Those affected can feel severely limited in their quality of life," write the experts.

"On the one hand, this is a result of the appearance, i.e. the increase in volume and the disproportion between the upper body and lower half of the body, on the other hand, the sufferers - especially in warm weather, after standing or sitting for a long time and in the evening - suffer from a feeling of tension with touch and pressure pain due to the edema, "it continues.

According to the information, the pain is mostly described as dull, oppressive and severe. Lipedema is predominantly localized on the upper and lower legs.

The feet are usually free from swelling.

Liposuction can help patients

Liposuction is one of the ways to treat lipedema.

But: "The cost of liposuction is NOT (!) Usually covered by the health insurance, since it is not a standard benefit in the sense of the service catalog of the health insurance," reports Lipedema Help Germany on its website.

"The amount of the cost for 1 liposuction varies from doctor to doctor and amounts to approx. € 3,900 to approx. € 5,000", explains the association.

Fast and unbureaucratic help

Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn (CDU) now wants to help affected women as quickly as possible and above all unbureaucratically.

According to a communication from the Ministry, an amendment to the Appointments Service and Supply Act has been tabled for this, which still has to be discussed by Parliament.

As a result, liposuction for lipedema should then become statutory health insurance benefits.

“Up to three million women with pathological fat distribution disorders suffer every day from the fact that health insurance companies do not pay for their therapy after a court decision. We want to help you quickly and without red tape, ”says Spahn. (ad)
